Notes for REBECCA BOATWRIGHT:

Information concerning the children of John and Rebecca was received from Shawnda Kimmel.
BIOGRAPHY: [David Rains quoting Shawnda Kimmel]:
Children of John Hamilton & Rebecca Boatwright:
Judith Anne Hamilton, Mary Washington Hamilton, Sarah Hamilton, Augustus Marion Hamilton, Louisa C. Hamilton.

Per the application that Rebecca filed for a pension based on John Hamilton's service in War of 1812, Rebecca states that she was married in Cumberland County.

The Civil War period must have been sad for Rebecca and her siblings. Sons of the brothers who went to Ohio were Union. Rebecca and her sister as well as brothers from Southwest Virginia had Confederate sons.

Greenfield Cemetery

Burial: Greenfield Cemetery, Goochland County, Virginia

The cemetery is visable on the hill. Rebecca and her daughter Anne have the tall stones. Rebecca's daughter Mary Washington Hamilton Ranson and her husband Alexander Ranson are in front of Rebecca and Mary Washington Hamilton Ranson's daughter Nannie Ranson Jenkins and husband William George Jenkins

The tall markers for Rebecca and her daughter Anne were cut from a little quarry that is to the right as you enter the town of Columbia about 7 miles to the west.

The cemetery appears to have been originally laid out for Archibald Bryce who built Greenfield before the Revolution.

Meador Boatright Gravestone

See link for copy of letter from Meador's brother Daniel Boatright and cousin William Meador.

Norman Hood Ricker, Jr., in his "History of the Boat(w)right Family of the Southeastern United States", spells his first name as "Meadow", which was thought to be his mother's maiden name. However, in Virgil D. White's "Index to the War of 1812 Pensioners", Vol. 1, the name is spelled "Meador", and it is also clearly spelled "Meador" in his father's will. It is also interesting to note that in his father's will the family name is spelled "Boatright" whereas it is spelled "Boatwright" in most other documents.

He was born 7-19-1796 near Jenkins Chapel, Cumberland Co VA. He died in 1876 and is buried near Stoney Creek, north of Fort Blackamore, Scott County, Virginia, where he resided most of his life.

Traditions: all of Meador's sons were in CSA Army and three were captured at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee and died at Ft. Douglas with measles; that his son John M. died at Gettysburg; that he whipped a man for claiming his ancestors were Tories; that a brother of his wife Molly captured by Shawnee Indians who raised him; he married among the Indians, returned to civilization when he learned who he was but returned to the Shawnee's to live. Meador married Molly Pendleton (1809-1893) ca 1829 probably near Ft. Blackamore. Molly died at Rye Cove, Scott County, Virginia.

Article from Newspaper: Mrs. Mollie Boatright, who lives near Fort Blackmore, Scott county, has authentic evidence that she is past 98 years old yet she has not lost her sight or quit work. She has numerous descendents including several great great grandchildren. Her husband, Meadow Boatright, who died about twenty-eight years ago, was a hatter by trade and made a large number of hats for Confederate soldiers.
