JAMES VALENTINE BOATRIGHT (MEADOR8, VALENTINE MARTIN7, DANIEL6, BENONI5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born Jul 1829 in Scott County, Virginia, and died Bef. 1910 in Wise County, Virginia. Notes for JAMES VALENTINE BOATRIGHT:

Served in CSA, 21st Battalion, Virginia Infantry; 64th Regiment, Virginia Mounted Infantry; and 25th Regiment, Virginia Cavalry.

21st Infantry Battalion [also called Pound Gap or Special Service Battalion] was organized during the fall of 1861 with six companies. The unit served in the Department of Western Virginia until November, 1862, when it merged into the 64th Regiment Virginia Infantry. Lieutenant Colonel Campbell Slemp and Major John B. Thompson were in command.

64th Regiment Mounted Infantry was organized in December, 1862, by consolidating the 21st and 29th Battalions Virginia Infantry. Prior to September 1, 1863, it was known as the 64th Infantry, and after that date it was also called the 64th Cavalry. On September 9, a large part of this unit was captured at Cumberland Gap. Later it served in Williams', Giltner's, and W.E. Jones' Brigade and confronted the Federals in various conflicts in East Tennessee, western Virginia, and North Carolina. During April, 1864, it totalled 268 effectives, but in April, 1865, less than 50 disbanded. The field officers were Colonels Auburn L. Pridemore and Campbell Slemp, Lieutenant Colonel James B. Richmond, and Major Harvey Gray.

25th Cavalry Regiment was organized in July, 1864, using the 27th Battalion Virginia Partisan Rangers as its nucleus. Serving in McCausland's and Imboden's Brigade, the unit fought in numerous engagements in western Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. During April, 1865, it disbanded. Its commanders were Colonel Warren M. Hopkins, Lieutenant Colonel Henry A. Edmundson, and Major Sylvester R. McConnell.

Notes for JOHN MEADOR BOATRIGHT:

Camp Douglas Sketch

Served in CSA, 64th Regiment, Virginia Infantry, captured at Cumberland Gap, Virginia on September 9, 1863 and died a prisoner of war at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois.

The 64th Regiment Virginia Mounted Infantry, which was organized December 14, 1862. During the four years of the war, the unit was reorganized many times, under different names and different commands. The Regiment was reorganized again on September 1, 1863 at Cumberland Gap and was called the 64th Regiment Virginia Mounted Cavalry under the command of Col. Campbell Slemp and Lt. Col. Auburn L. Pridemore. John Meador was captured during the surrender of Cumberland Gap on September 9, 1863.

Apparently this was a unit organized primarily to guard the mountain passes into Lee County from the North and the men were promised that they would serve only in their home area. Most of them were not slave holders and their main reasons for serving was to protect their homes and families and to support their Lee County cousins. Feeding their families remained their top priority and they thought nothing of leaving their unit to go home for spring planting or fall harvesting, perhaps returning when the work was completed…perhaps not. While they obviously could have been a formidable fighting unit, they were strongly independent and didn’t take too kindly to discipline and so were not as effective as they might have been. Camp Douglas Photo - 1863 In 1861, a tract of land at 31st Street and Cottage Grove Avenue in Chicago was provided by the estate of Stephen A. Douglas for a Union Army training post on the original site of the first University of Chicago. The first Confederate prisoners of war, more than 7,000 from the capture of Fort Donelson in Tennessee, arrived in February 1862 by the Illinois Central railroad which ran along the shore of Lake Michigan just to the east of the camp. Eventually, over 26,000 Confederate soldiers passed through the prison camp, which eventually came to be known as the North's "Andersonville" for its inhumane conditions.

Prisoners were deprived of clothing to discourage escapes. Many wore sacks with head and arm holes cut out; few had underwear. Blankets to offset the bitter northern winter were confiscated from the few that had them. The weakest froze to death. The Chicago winter of 1864 was devastating. The loss of 1,091 lives in only four months was heaviest for any like period in the camp's history, and equaled the deaths at the highest rate of Andersonville from February to May, 1864.

Oak Woods Cemetery, Confederate Monument It is estimated that from 1862–1865, more than 6,000 Confederate prisoners died from disease, starvation, and the bitter cold winters (although as many as 1,500 were reported as "unaccounted" for). The largest number of prisoners held at any one time was 12,000 in December, 1864. Accounts vary as to precise numbers. According to 80 Acres of Hell, a television documentary produced by the A&E Network and the The History Channel, the reason for the uncertainty is that many records were intentionally destroyed after the war. The documentary also alleges that, for a period of time, the camp contracted with an unscrupulous undertaker who sold some of the bodies of Confederate prisoners to medical schools and had the rest buried in shallow graves without coffins. Some were even dumped in Lake Michigan only to wash up on its shores. Many, however, were initially buried in unmarked pauper's graves in Chicago's City Cemetery (located on the site of today's Lincoln Park), but in 1867 were reinterred at what is now known as Confederate Mound in Oak Woods Cemetery (5 miles south of the former Camp Douglas).

Nobody was ever held accountable for the conditions and actions at Camp Douglas, in fact the only Union general to gain the rank without seeing combat was an overseer of Camp Douglas. This is also to this date the largest mass grave in the western hemisphere, as documented by the book To Die in Chicago.

Oak Woods Cemetery, Confederate Monument Plaque Oak Woods Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois was established in 1854 on an area of 183 acres located at 1035 E. 67th Street in Chicago, Illinois. The first burials took place in 1860. During the American Civil War, six thousand Confederate soldiers and prisoners of war who died at Camp Douglas (Chicago) were buried together in a mass grave. A monument known as the Confederate Mound was erected in their memory.

The Confederate dead here buried in concentric trenches were all private soldiers.

The monument to their memory is of Georgia granite, stands forty feet from the ground to the top of statue and was erected in July 1893 with funds mainly subscribed by liberal citizens of Chicago and camps of the United Confederate Veterans. The bronze statue surmounting the battlemented cap of the column is a realistic representation of a Confederate infantry soldier after the surrender. The face expresses sorrow for the thousands of prison dead interred beneath. Around the base of the monument are bronze tablets with the name and unit of every Confederate buried here.

Egbert Garnett Boatright

Obituary of Egbert Garnett Boatright, born 10-1-1826 Buckingham County, Virginia
Son of Jonas Boatwright and Polly Montgomery
Died 7-30-1914, at Newton, Jasper Co, Iowa

Published in the Anita Record

Egbert Garnett Boatright was born in Buckingham, Virginia, October 1st 1826, and died at the home of his cousin Arthur Lufkin, in Newton, Iowa, July 30th 1914, aged 87 years, 9 months and 29 days. death was the result of hemorrhage of the brain, brought on by a severe cold, contracted a few days prior to the attack. In company with his daughter, Miss Virginia, Father Boatright had been visiting relatives and friends in Iowa and Nebraska, and had stopped at Newton on their way home, to visit the Russell and Murphy families, when he was suddenly stricken with what proved to be his last illness.

On March 4th, 1855, Father Boatright was united in marriage to Miss Terese Oldaker, and to this union six children were born: four daughters and two sons: Analiza, who died in infancy; Josephine Clerissa, who died in 1912; Miss Virginia Russell Boatright, Miss Mary Price Boatright, of Russell, Ohio; Geo.W. Boatright, of Stuart, Iowa; and H.E. Boatright, of this city. Mother Boatright, his beloved companion for more than fifty years, passed away at the old home in Russell, Ohio. The golden wedding anniversary of Father and Mother Boatright was very appropriately and joyously observed at the old home on March 4th, 1905.

Funeral services were held at the Lufkin home in Newton on Friday, conducted by Rev. Perdew, of the M.E. Church, whose discourse was especially appropriate; expressing in beautiful sentiment, a most worthy tribute to the noble and useful life of the deceased. Accompanied by G.W. and Miss Virginia Boatright, the remains were taken to the old home at Russell, Ohio, where services were again held on Sunday afternoon, interment taking place in the family lot, where rest the remains of the wife and two daughters.

In early life Father Boatright taught school, and afterwards engaged in the mercantile business. Later, he was appointed Postmaster, and also agent for the B. & O. S. W. R'y, both of which positions he held until a few years ago, when age and ill health made it necessary for him to re-sign, since which time he has been living a quiet, retired life, in the full enjoyment of every comfort and convenience of the evening of his day. He was a lifelong member of the M.E. Church; being a member of the first Board of Trustees of the Church at Russell, Ohio, which was established in 1858; one of his associates being his cousin Sam Russell, now a resident of Newton, Iowa, and who is over eighty years of age.

In politics, Father Boatright was a Republican; a stalwart of the stalwarts; one of those kind of Republicans who stood firm for the first and fundamental principles, regardless of the new and varied ideas attempted to be injected into platforms of recent making.

It was the pleasure of the writer to enjoy an intimate acquaintance with Father Boatright, covering a period of many years; and we knew and appreciated him as one of the grand old men, comprising the cherished list of good, true friends. Egbert Garnett came with his parents from Buckingham County, Virginia to Highland County, Ohio in 1834.

William E. Boatwright, in his manuscript titled The Boat(w)right And Allied Families, has an account written by Egbert Boatright 1893-95, while on an ancestor hunting trip to Buckingham and Cumberland Counties VA, Pg 1571a, b, c, d, and a newspaper article 7-7-1939 published in the News-Herald of Hillsboro, Ohio, on Pg 1571d and e, of his manuscript.

WILLIAM D. BOATRIGHT, farmer, P. O. New Vienna, Clinton County, Ohio, born in Rockingham County, Virginia, March 16, 1829, is a son of Jonas and Mary Boatright, natives of Virginia . The grandfather was Valentine Boatright, who was an early settler in Virginia, and lived and died there. He had four sons and two daughters who grew to maturity Meador, Valentine; Jonus and Daniel were the sons. The two first mentioned married and reside in Virginia . The two last mentioned emirated to Ohio and settled in Highland County - Jonas in 1833 and Daniel in 1835; the latter subsequently removed to Iowa, where he lived till his death. The two daughters, Rebecca, and Mary, married and also reside in Virginia. Jonas remained in Highland County till his death, January 25, 1871. His wife died January '35, 1867. They had eight children-Egbert G., William D., Martha (married to Abraham Roush), and residing in Kansas, Mary E. (married to A. Spickard), Tandy A., George W. (who resides in Kansas), Roxaline (married to Joseph Kirkhart), and James M.

The subject o£ the sketch was four years of age when brought to Ohio, and here grew to manhood, was married September 19, 1860, to Margaret Spear, who was born in Clinton County, December 24, 1839, and whose ancestral history is given in sketch of Zephaniah Spear. Mr. Boatrigbt in early life engaged in partnership with his eldest brother in mercantile trade in Fairview , Highland County; they also ran a store at Russell Station at the same time. This business they conducted with success for twelve years. Thence Mr. Boatright removed to Knox County, Illinois, and purchased land and entered upon farming, remaining there four years, when he exchanged his farm for the one where he now lives, on to which he moved in the fall of 1867, and here he has since resided. This place was then known as "the Dove farm." Here Mr. Boatright erected all the buildings on the place, has good improvements, constituting a pleasant home and farmer's residence.
