Note: John Embry, Attorney at Law, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, wrote this account as a Christmas present to the family. It was his 76th Christmas. Lucille Elhanon Kendrick McDonald gave this account to her granddaughter, who has transcribed the history in part to document and shed light on the family in a way that government documents cannot.

Below are selected excerpts from that family history in the voice of John Embry with the exception of notes in BLUE that clarify some of the information not available to John when the history was written:

Robert Anderson Boatwright was born in Central Missouri, the exact date is unknown, (13 Apr 1853). His parents were Daniel and Sara Frazier Boatwright... One family historian has Daniel’s name as “David”. Daniel Boatwright was a second cousin of Zachary Taylor, the twelfth President of the United States (have not proven this fact). Sara Frazier came from Virginia. How or when Robert Anderson Boatwright ancestors migrated to Missouri is unknown (Robert’s father, Daniel Boatwright, migrated to Missouri from Virginia, ca. 1818 – 1819).

He is first identified near Columbia, Missouri along about the time of the advance of the pioneers and near the Boonslick Road or its extension. Robert Anderson Boatwright married Elizabeth Scharff in about the year 1878, at or near Columbia, Missouri.

Elizabeth Scharff was the daughter of Henry Peter Scharff and Catherine Elizabeth Thomas, who were both born in that part of Germany known as Bavaria. Munich is the principal city in Bavaria. They were married in a Lutheran church and one child, John Frederick Scharff, was born in Germany.

In the early 1840’s the (Scharff) family emigrated from Germany to a site near Chicago, Illinois, then came to Americus, Montgomery County, Missouri, where Elizabeth Scharff was born in 1864, during the civil war. Henry Peter Scharff then moved to Hermann, Missouri, where he and his wife are buried.

Henry Peter Scharff last an eye in Germany due to a fever, and this exempted him from military duty. He was a carriage maker and casket maker. During the Civil War he shoed horses by contract with the Union Army. John Fredrick Scharff and his wife Cathering lived in St. Louis, Missouri until their death. They had two children, Frederick and Nora.

The name “Uncle Green” and the name of “Quisenberry” were mentioned often by Ivy (Ramsey Boatwright) Embry. The Quisenberry family of Columbia, Missouri were cousins for Robert Anderson Boatwright. It is assumed that Uncle Green may have been his brother (Greenbury Boatwright). Ivy R. Embry corresponded with one of the Quisenberry women at Columbia, Missouri. No further information is available as to the whereabouts of any of the family.

Robert Anderson Boatwright and his wife were a farm family and farmed near Columbia, Missouri until after the Sac and Fox opening in 1891. This opening included lands in Lincoln County, and after the opening, the R. A. Boatwright family moved to a farm on the north side of the Deep Fork River and west of the Sac and Fox Agency, and south of Stroud, Oklahoma.

In Missouri six of their children were born, Catherine, Ivy Ramsey, William Porter, Henry, Pearl and Everett. Catherine (Aunt Kate) was married to a person by the name of (George Barnett) McQuitty, in Missouri.

All the family moved together with the exception of Catherine McQuitty and Porter, who was deceased (1901). Aunt Kate had one child by this marriage by the name of Clifford McQuitty. After the death of McQuitty, Aunt Kate married (Elhanan) Jerome Kendrick, and they moved to a farm they purchased (not purchased Jerome obtained thru the Oklahoma land run) three or four miles southwest of Davenport, Oklahoma.

All the remainder of the R. A. Boatwright family were born on the farm near Stroud; Arvilla, Walter, Eva, Robert and Helen. Jim Thorpe, the famous Sac and Fox Indian athlete, was in attendance at school during the time that Ivy Boatwright went to/attended.

Sometime, about 1912 to 1913, Elizabeth (Scharff) Boatwright inherited about $8,000.00 from a relative who had died in Germany. Just who this relative was is unknown, except reference was made to an uncle who had a title and was an industrialist.

The family decided to leave the farm, move to Tulsa, Oklahoma and enter the grocery business. The son, Henry, his father and mother operated the business, which was located on Riverside Drive in Tulsa.

In about 1914, a flu or some other epidemic, brought most of the family down and in a short time Arvilla, Walter and Helen died. This was a great tragedy to Elizabeth Boatwright, and she became distraught, sick, and unable to care for or maintain her family. She was hospitalized and then came to live with her daughter, Ivy Embry, at Chandler, Oklahoma, where she died in 1915. She is buried in Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler, Oklahoma.

Robert Anderson Boatwright died in 1916 (11 Feb 1918) at Sapulpa, Oklahoma where his son Everett lived. He is buried in the last grave in the northeast corner of the old Sapulpa, Oklahoma Cemetery.

Not much is known about the life of the R. A. Boatwright family in Missouri other than orderly and productive family life. It is perceived to have been a good satisfactory and happy life of a proud family. Uncle Green was the hunter and a fisherman, a trait followed by Henry Boatwright, John Embry and the Webb boys, particularly Bart Webb. They were good farmers on the Stroud farm.

It was a great event to go to Grandpa and Grandma Boatwright’s for a visit, good times and good eats. Often, Freddie and Nora (Scharff) were present. These were intelligent, substantial and grand people. The first and most elegant two-seated, two-horse drawn surrey with fringe on top that appeared in the community was that of the R. A. Boatwright’s. Everybody would get to take a ride and a turn driving the fine horses. The surrey was shiny black with small red body stripes and was the “Cadillac” of the times.

The desire for a better life and place for the family obtain an education and grow up prompted the decision to move to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Tulsa was an oil metropolis and second city in Oklahoma in population and growth and had great advantages. Fate was not kind. At Tulsa, sickness and death ended the happy family life of the R. A. Boatwright family.

The remaining young ones at home, Eva and Robert, went to live with others. Eva with J. A. Embry for a short time, and then with Rev. and Mrs. Charles Morison, a Methodist Minister, who had no children. Robert went to his brother Henry’s where he remained until his death of typhoid fever in 1920. He is buried in Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler, Oklahoma, beside his mother.

Henry Boatwright and family moved to a farm west of Davenport, Oklahoma and later back to Tulsa, Oklahoma. He became a grocer. He was a competitive trap-shooter and belonged to the local club.

This account is not coordinated, and there is no input here other than Ivy (Boatwright) Embry accounts and that provided by the J. A. Embry family. This account is disseminated to provide the living relatives all of the family history that the author has assembled. The family are free and privileged to reproduce this account completely or in part and to edit and revise. The author regrets he cannot provide a more complete account. He feels that this grand family deserves more. He is very proud of the family and of being a member of it.

John Embry, 216 N. W. 33rd Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73118

Note: John Embry passed away June 18, 1988 and is buried in Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler, Oklahoma. He served his country in World War II and in Korea as a Colonel in the United States Army.

8-378. SAMUEL ORSON BOATWRIGHT (DRURY WILSON8, SAMUEL7, JAMES6, BENONI5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born 14 May 1844 in Palmyra, Fluvanna County, Virginia, and died 19 Aug 1864 in Point Lookout Prisoner Camp, St. Mary's County, Maryland.

Notes for SAMUEL ORSON BOATWRIGHT:

Samuel Orson Boatwright

Samuel served in the Army of the Confederacy. He enlisted as a Private, Company C, 44th Infantry Regiment Virginia. He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House on May 12, 1864, during the battle of the bloody angle.

May 11th was mostly spent in preparing for another battle. Grant determined to strike Lee's right center where it appeared most vulnerable. The night was very dark and stormy. Grant moved at midnight, and Hancock took a position within 1,200 yards of the Confederate line. He stormed it at 4 A.M. on the 12th. He burst through the lines, and, after a hand-to-hand conflict inside the trenches, captured 4,000 men, and drove his adversaries through the woods towards the village. At the second line of entrenchments Hancock's men, having lost their organization, were forced to retire to the first, which they held with the aid of the 6th Corps. Five times during the day Robert E. Lee attempted to dislodge Hancock, but was repulsed each time, with heavy loss. So fierce had been the battle that one-half of the forest within range of the musketry was destroyed by bullet wounds. A tree 18 inches in diameter was entirely cut in two by musket balls. The scene of the engagement was afterwards known as " the field of the bloody angle."

In May 1864, Union wounded and Confederate prisoners from the battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House were transported to the wharves at Belle Plain on Potomac Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River, located east of Falmouth. Samuel was confined at Belle Plain, Stafford County, Virginia, May 14, 1864. He was transferred to Point Lookout on May 18, 1864. He died 3 months later on August 19, 1864. His name is inscribed at the base of the monument to Confederate soldiers buried at Point Lookout Cemetery.

Belle Plain, Stafford County, Virginia

In May 1864, Union planners searching hurriedly for a supply base in the Fredericksburg area chose the stretch of shoreline known as Belle Plain. Situated on the south side of Potomac Creek near its junction with the Potomac River, Belle Plain offered many logistic advantages: it was closer to Fredericksburg than were the nearby Aquia Creek landings, it did not share Aquia's dependence upon a connecting railroad, and it had hosted Federal supply operations earlier in the war. Thus Union forces reoccupied Belle Plain by May 10, 1864 and on May 12 constructed the first of two pontoon wharves there: one on the west side of Whipsawason's Point, one-half mile east of (downstream from) modern Belle Plain Landing, and another at Pratt's Point, a mile downstream from Whipsawason's.

Navigating past crowds of reinforcements, stevedores, guards, and medical personnel thronging the wharves, Northern photographers soon made their way to the Punch Bowl depressions. There on May 16th or 17th they produced what would prove to be a record number of photographs of Confederate prisoners in an active combat zone. The captives were among a total of about 7,500, their vanguard arriving from the Wilderness and Spotsylvania battlefields on May 13th and their rearguard departing for Northern prisons on May 18th.

Belle Plain was the objective of a remarkable procession that left Fredericksburg at 6:00 a.m. on May 13th. First came an ambulance carrying captured Confederate Generals Edward Johnson and George Stuart, escorted by a detachment of the 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry. Then came a group of Confederate officers of lesser grades escorted by two companies of the 80th New York Infantry. Next were two regiments of Confederate enlisted men, the first guarded by the 68th Pennsylvania Infantry and the second by another detachment of the 80th New York. These Southern "regiments" were provisional creations of the commander of the Union escorts, Colonel Theodore Gates, who formed them from "companies" of 100 prisoners each. Members of the 15th New York Light Artillery constituted the column's next segment, providing visual variety with their four guns and associated teams and vehicles. In the wake of the guns came five more of Gates's pseudo-regiments, overseen by the 4th and 5th New York Cavalry and the 2nd Michigan Infantry. Guards and captives arrived at Belle Plain at about 5:00 p.m. and rested for nearly an hour, after which the former herded their officer-charges aboard the steamer Star and placed the balance of the captives in bivouac on shore. In his diary Gates estimated that his men conveyed a total of 7,000 Confederates.

Gates' prisoners would be the first and largest group of arrivals by far, but later contingents created major fluctuations in Belle Plain's Confederate census. The Star evidently delayed departing until May 14th, while other captive groups left on May 16th and on each of the three days that followed. Despite the arrival of an additional, 275-prisoner group on May 16th, only 26 captives remained at Belle Plain by May 20th. Their numbers swelled dramatically the next day with the arrival of a batch of 497. The Union garrison shipped the last of the prisoners on May 23rd and abandoned the landings on May 24th.

Confederate Prisoners at Belle Plain and the Belle Plain Wharf

Belle Plain's hosting of more than 7,800 Confederates over the ten-day period between May 13th and 23rd elicited considerable comment by Northern onlookers. Walking along one of the wharves, a female nurse encountered a squad of captive Southern officers, "strong, well-fed, iron looking men....There's no `give in' in such...." In a letter to a home-state newspaper, a member of the U.S. Christian Commission described chatting with other prisoners, who expressed "wonderful confidence in `Old Bobby', as they familiarly term Lee" and in the superior piety of his army. The correspondent also claimed that Major-General Johnson was "surly as a bear[,] tried to raise a mutiny in camp" and was marched off to the Star amid the mocking strains of "Yankee Doodle." A chaplain noted that bandsmen from the 1st Rhode Island Cavalry harassed their charges with the same tune, adding "Johnnie Stole a Ham" and "Ain't You Glad to Get Out of the Wilderness?" to the barrage. However, the Southerners he spoke with generally maintained "good spirits, and said that Lee knew what he was about, and...would fight till the last man fell."

Point Lookout Prisoner Camp, St. Mary's County, Maryland

Point Lookout is located in the most southern point of Maryland's western shore. It is bordered by the Potomac River on the west and the Chesapeake Bay to the east.

Point Lookout Sketch:

Point Lookout Sketch

Before the Civil War, Point Lookout was a summer resort with a hotel, numerous beach cottages and a large pier and lighthouse. In 1862 the US government neede a hospital to treat wounded and sick soldiers from the Northern Armies. The Government leased the Point Lookout Resort to use as an Army hospital. They recieved their first Union Army patients on 8/17/1862. In 1863 a number of Conferate prisoners were ordered to be confined on the hospital grounds, they were mostly Southern Marylander's accused of helping the Confederacy.

Shortly after the Battle of Gettysburg they started building a rebel camp, Camp Hoffman, to hold 10,000 prisoners of war. In December 1863 they had over 9,000 POWs here. In June 1864 they had over 20,000 prisoners. 3,384 men died in this prison. Point Lookout held a total of 52,264 prisoners during the war, most of whom were enlisted men. When the Civil War ended in Apr 1865 they transferred the prisoners to the South, the last prisoner leaving Jun 1865.

G.W. Jones, a private of Co. H, 24th Virginia Cavalry, described his ominous entrance into the prison amidst "a pile of coffins for dead rebels," hearing the lid close shut on his own soon thereafter when he learned that the system of prisoner exchanges had been suspended for the duration of the war. Jones described the camp as laid out into a series of streets and trenches, intended to aid in drainage, and surrounded by a fourteen foot parapet wall. Prisoners, who lived sixteen or more to a tent, were subjected to habitually short rations and limited fire wood in winter, and when the coffee ration was suspended for federal prisoners at Andersonville, the Point Lookout prisoner lost theirs as well.

The worst the prisoners suffered, however, may have been inflicted by the physical conditions. The flat topography, sandy soil, and an elevation barely above high tide led to poor drainage, and the area was subjected to every imaginable extreme of weather, from blazing heat to bone-chilling cold. Polluted water exacerbated the problems of inadequate food, clothing, fuel, housing, and medical care, and as a result, approximately 4,000 prisoners died there over 22 months.

Point Lookout Monument: Estimates report that over 14,000 prisoners died while imprisoned at Point Lookout but the cemetery is known to hold 3,384 soldiers in a mass grave with no evidence to back up this massive figure. According to history data received from Point Lookout State Park, " Of the 50,000 men held at the Point between 1863 and 1865, nearly 4,000 died. Ironically, however, this death rate of 8 percent was less than half the death rate among soldiers who were in the field with their own armies." As you can see, there seems to be some controversy over the number of deaths at this prison.

The Confederate soldiers' bodies have been moved twice and have found their final resting place in Point Lookout Cemetery. The first Confederate monument ever constructed has been placed above this mass grave. Made of granite and standing over 85 feet tall, the base of it is covered with bronze tablets, telling the story of the Confederate soldiers lost at Point Lookout Civil War Prison.
