Death Claimed Daniel Boatwright Last Wednesday. The First Death Here from Heat Prostration
The first death from heat prostration in Stanberry last Wednesday afternoon claimed the life of Daniel Boatwright, 77-year-old resident. Mr. Boatwright became ill from the heat last Tuesday night and last Wednesday morning his condition was more serious.
He remained in a serious condition throughout the day and death came to relive his suffering at 3:30 o'clock last Wednesday afternoon. He died at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Florance Gage.
The following obituary has been furnished this office:
Daniel Boatwright was born on Feb. 14, 1857 near the Hall schoolhouse and departed this life at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Florance Gage, on August 8, 1934, at the age of 77 years, five months and 24 days.
In the year of 1879 he was married to Delphia Jennings and to this union one son was born. In his early life he was converted and became a member of the Methodist Church.
He is survived by the one son, Charles, of Cameron, Mo. He also took three grandchildren into his home and loved and cared for them as his own. They were Mrs. Sadie Miller and Mrs. Florance Gage of Stanberry and Mrs. Grace O'Bannon of Waverly, Kansas.
There were also nine other grandchildren; one brother, Samuel Boatwright of Stanberry; one sister, Mrs. Anise Stevens of Centrailia, Wash; three half-sisters, Lola and Bessie Boatwright and Lona Geer, of St Joseph; besides a host of other relatives and friends.
"Uncle Dan," as he was familiarly known, always had a smile and a kind word for everyone he met. He will be greatly missed by all, but most of all by the loved ones at home.
Funeral services were held at the Pleasant Ridge Church, three miles south of Enyart last Friday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Frank Groom. Interment was in the Pleasant Ridge cemetery. The funeral was in charge of the Pennington Undertaking Company.

Death: The following letter tells of the fight at Angeles, Philippine Islands, in which Edwin S. Boatright, the Gentry county soldier boy, met his death. The letter was this week handed to us by Mrs. T.M. Stevens of this place, who was a sister of the dead soldier.

Dear sir;
Your favor of Aug. 28 addressed to Capt. D.F. Angium, Twelfth infantry, has been referred to me for an answer, and I regret to state that the soldier to whom you make reference in your letter as having been killed in a recent battle was your son, Edwin S. Boatright. This fact is established by an entry in the Company description book, which gives his birth place as Alanthus Grove, Missouri. The same address was found engraved in a name plate which he carried attached to his belt at the time of his death. He enlisted at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, Aug. 11, 1898, having been discharged from Company C, 12th infantry, July 7, 1898, after five years service. As you state in your letter, he was a Company musician, having been appointed as such Dec. 24, 1898.
Your son's untimely and much-to-be regretted death occurred at about noon on the 16th of August, during the 12th infantry's capture of Angles, P.I. Our company occupied one of the most advanced positions on the firing line, and Musician Boatright especially distinguished himself in the engagement by the cool and fearless manner in which he performed his duties under heavy fire from the enemy. At the decisive moment of the battle he picked up a prostrated comrade's rifle and ammunition and voluntarily joined in the charge on the enemy's trenches, within a short distance of them he was struck down by a bullet which penetrated his body.
His death was instantaneous (?) and painless. His remains were brought to Manila, P.I. and there interred with military honors by Chaplin C.C. Pierce, U.S. Army.
This sad occurrence cast a gloom over our victory and left a vacancy amongst our men that will be hard to fill. For not only in his own company but throughout the regiment was your son known as a gallant and faithful soldier, exceptionally devoted to his duty, and his life, as well as his death, set an example worthy to be emulated by an soldier. His officers and comrades hereby extend their heartfelt sympathies to you and his other relatives.
Musician Boatright's effects are at present stored at Manila, P.I. and if you desire to claim them you can do so by writing to the Commanding Officer Company C, 12th Infantry, Manila, P.I. This should be done at an early date, as the Army Regulation direct that a deceased soldier's unclaimed effects be sold 30 days from the date of his death. In compliance with the wished expressed by the deceased a few days before his death, a couple of trinkets will be forwarded as soon as access can be had to them--to a lady friend of his, to whom it is understood he was to be married, but whose name and address are at present unknown.

Notes for EVA MAE "EVIE" BOATWRIGHT:
Eva adopted by Charles (a farmer) and Antonia Morrison between 1915 and 1920. The Morrisons moved with her to Lake County, California between census of 1910 and 1920, when the 1920 census lists her as their daughter. The Morrisons had no children of their own, but had adopted a boy John Smith (born 1890) before the 1900 census, who was no longer in the household by the 1920 Lake County census.
The Morrisons settled in Lake County, California, between Nice and Lucerne on Clear Lake's eastern shore. Per my mother, Eva's daughter Lily, there they operated a campground and a few cabins for rent, then a small gas station which made its best profit selling gas to the Conservation Corps.
Eva married Charles Roth sometime between 1920 and 1924 (age between 16 and 20 y/o). Charles Roth was a laborer, from Bippus, Indiana, and according to my mom he was a member of the CCC crew in Lake County during the depression.
Eva and Charles moved to Lucerne, Lake County, California. (1930 census lists Eva, Charles Roth, Howard and Lily Roth as a family in Lake County). At some point thereafter they moved to Gardena, Caliornia near Los Angeles (my mother remembers the Long Beach earthquakes effects on the high school near her house, and recounts an incident when she was seven years old, which pins it to about 1932 and certainly 1933). Eva and Charles had two kids (April 1930 census for Lake County records Charles (35 y/o) and Eva (26 y/o) Roth as parents to Howard (6 y/o) and Lily (5, b. 27 Feb'25, Los Angeles). Lily's proper middle name is Korine.
Charles had work as a CCC enlistee, but apparently he and Eva divorced. I have no record of when and where she went from there as of yet. There is a pretty good possiblity it was to Long Beach, California at some point where she met and married LeRoy Miles, an oilfield roughneck. Lily and Howard were raised by the Morrisons on Clear Lake until they left home (she to work on her own, he to join the Navy).
Eva and LeRoy remained married until her death in Missoula or Ronan, Montana on 02 August '64. (An obit on Acom states place of death as Lake County, but that was Montana, not Lake County, California). They traveled to Iran with ARAMCO (Arab American Oil) in the Fifties, per Lily's accounting (I have the passport somewhere), returned to the U.S. and eventually bought a ranch outside Ronan, Montana where they raised Herefords, pigs, and chickens (she managed the chicken operation where they eventually had their own processing room with professional equipment and two part time workers).
They had to move to town when Leroy had a heart attack, where they lived in a tidy single wide on its own lot just off the main street. Eva kept house, Leroy ran the town dump (where he taught me to shoot).
Eva suffered a short series of strokes in early 1964 and died after seeming to make a rally. Leroy died years later in Long Beach, California, living alone but near his blood relatives (first wife's offspring).
My family and I visited them at Ronan twice in the late Fifties, and I attended Eva's funeral as a young boy. We rode back to Los Angeles with LeRoy (aka "Pappy"). I remember Eva as having a rounded face, strong chin and steady gaze. I remember Eva giving a neighbor a dressing down for leaving out a dog in the summer without water. She let my sister and I sit in the chicken processing room where we watched them slaughter, de-feather, and remove the feet/head from the chickens, a very patient and understanding grandmother. We had a ball!
I met "Grandma" Morrison a few times when I was under 10 y/o (before 1963), at Lake County. I was not told her relationship to my Roth family until I interviewed my mother around 2007 or so. Antonia Morrison was very soft spoken, I believe she spoke English as her "1-1/2" language.
Charles Roth went on to remarry, had no further children, and he and his second wife remained together until their deaths in Arkansas.
Under the family legend heading...Mom says the family became Lutherans when "a priest" would not come out to the family "during a plague", date and location and denomination unknown, not known if that was Boatwright or Roth family. Maybe in Germany? Maybe during the 1914-1915 period her mom and siblings died (probably due to typhoid or influenza).
