Notes for DAVID ELMORE BOATWRIGHT:

First Pastor, David Elmore Boatwright and Cora, Mr.& Mrs. F. A. Sunderman

Upper Room Church of Christ

The church now known as the Upper Room Church of God began as a small group of people at the corner of North Main and Frazer Street. The Rev. Mayes from Detroit rented this storeroom and later received Rev. D. E. Boatwright and the two worked together for a short time. Rev. Boatwright was then given the pastorate. An old "skating rink" on Meeks Ave. was then rented to hold services in. The rent was high and the building was hard to heat so the church decided to leave there.

The church had no affiliation at that time and it was decided to join a good Pentecostal church. Rev. Boatwright's son, David was visiting his father and suggested the church join the Church of God with headquarters in Cleveland, Tennessee, so the Rev. D. G. Phillips, Ohio State overseer, was sent for and the church was set in order Oct. 27, 1936 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Sunderman, 542 Cherry Street. There were 25 charter members: Rev. and Mrs. D. E. Boatwright, Jack and Phillip Boatwright, Gertrude Burnfeil, Max Fry, G. N. Copus, June Deeds, Mrs. Pastorious, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fry, Ardine Ward, Wayne Ward, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Copus, Mr. and Mrs. William Norris, Gerald Cooper, Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Sunderman, Paul and Kenny Sunderman, Mr. and Mrs. Elli Hackenberger and Clarence Copus.

Notes for JOHN WILBER BOATWRIGHT:

EDITORIAL: Landing 25th
Williamsburg Gazette
Saturday, July 17, 2010

Williamsburg Landing was an idea before its time, downright prescient. Retirement living used to be defined as selling the home in Connecticut and moving to Florida or Virginia. After that, who knows?

John Boatwright knew. He was the chairman of Old Colony Bank & Trust who went on to help create the Landing. He and Ran Ruffin of Colonial Williamsburg were thinking as early as 1965 in terms of local couples who didn’t want to leave town to go into an old folks home. So why not give them something better –– a retirement community.

As current president Steve Montgomery put it Thursday night at a gala reception, “The first 76 settlers arrived with dirt streets, no mail service and barely a roof over their head.” And the roof leaked.

Today the number of residents speak volumes. Among 2,000 residents over time, two-thirds have been from greater Williamsburg. Many of them were the Northeastern retirees who bought homes in subdivisions and later scaled down. The Landing has also served many other seniors for temporary stays in the skilled nursing unit.

In her history of the place, Ellen Rueger recalled how the original cluster houses had mariner names for the layouts. She and her husband lived in the Binnicle model. One visitor mistook it as Barnacle. “Not showing any notice of her error, Charlie replied, ‘Well, I guess you could say it grows on you.’”

Efforts were made to recruit Colonial Williamsburg or Nelson Rockefeller to underwrite the venture. Instead, it became a stand-alone corporation. One of the principles was undoubtedly Boatwright’s: “Under no condition was such a home to be financed by a federal government handout.”

Early plans were to build a facility that was affordable for employees of Colonial Williamsburg. Former school teachers were in on the early discussions. Alas, it evolved into a more wealthy conclave.

The original developer was McClurg Corp., but it became overextended by the late 1970s. Overtures came from Virginia United Methodist Church, but that fell through when the California Methodist Homes went bankrupt. American Retirement Corp. stepped in, and before long a certificate was issued for the first 15 beds. Construction of 102 cluster homes and the rest of the main campus began in February 1984.

The Landing has expanded over the years to include more living units as well as a spectacular health club named for former president William A. Doig. Nearby, the Woodhaven complex provides assisted living, nursing home and dementia care in a coordinated and professional setting.

The only controversy was over the lengthy soundwall erected by the Landing along Route 199 along the marshes of College Creek. Drivers objected to the ugliness of the thing, but now we’re used to it. Residents gagged at the $1 million cost. Today the soundwall is part of the landscape, literally.

The notion of continuous care retirement community is now bedrock in America. Ford’s Colony tried to build a very big one before NIMBY and the housing recession hit. WindsorMeade got out of the gate, but because of the recession its population lags way behind the 500 residents of Williamsburg Landing. The Candle Factory mixed-use development has a continuing care unit built in.

The recession badly cramped the resale of big houses here and everywhere, in turn slowing couples from advancing to the Landing. Optimism exists, fortunately. Woodhaven now plans to expand by 24 units, though it may be years away.

By the way, historian Ellen Rueger is 95 and epitomizes the spirit of vigorous continuity. John Boatwright’s wife, Jean, still lives there too.

Notes for JEAN ELIZABETH NUBER:

Obit - Charlotte News and Observer

Jean Nuber Boatwright passed away on February 3, 2012 at the age of 90. The daughter of the late Admiral Horace David Nuber and Janet Bryant Nuber, she was born in Norfolk, VA, on July 9, 1921. She grew up in Beverly Hills, CA and graduated from Beverly Hills High School.

While traveling in 1956, a kind friend of the family offered to show her around Washington, D.C. This friendship blossomed into a lifelong romance. She married John Wilbur Boatwright on March 22, 1958 in Evanston, IL. While living in Paris, she gave birth to her first child, Blair. The family relocated to Washington, D.C., where Kim was born. In 1966, the family moved to Williamsburg, VA, where she devoted endless time and effort to her community.

A devoted mother and wife, she exerted herself tirelessly in support of her husband and family, and was fiercely proud of their achievements. Her philanthropy has benefitted countless people in her efforts toward the development of Williamsburg Landing, where she became one of the founding residents. She brightened the lives of the residents and staff with her infectious laugh.

She was thoughtful, kind and devoted to her many friends. Compassion for those in need guided her to help establish scholarship funds at Wake Forest University and Texas A& M University-Corpus Christi for students in need. She was also the moving force and benefactor behind the Boatwright Chapel at Williamsburg Landing.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Wilbur Boatwright. She is survived by her son, Blair David Sterba-Boatwright and his wife, Sandra, of Corpus Christi, TX; and her daughter, Kimberly Boatwright Shirley and her husband, Graham, of Raleigh, NC; two step-sons, John Boatwright and wife, Evelyn, of Houston, TX and Samuel Boatwright and wife, Jan, of Black Mountain, NC; nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

The memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 6, in the auditorium of Williamsburg Landing.

The family requests gifts in lieu of flowers be made to the Williamsburg Landing Benevolence Fund, c/o Sally Wolfe, 5700 Williamsburg Landing Drive, Williamsburg, Virginia, 23185; the Jean N. Boatwright Scholarship Fund of Wake Forest University, Office of University Advancement, Box 7227, Winston-Salem, NC, 27109; or the John W. The next year Pete became principal at Roosevelt Jr. High, which was located at 2nd and Quinton in Topeka. He remained in this position until 1961 when he moved to Highland Park High School. In 1962 he accepted the position as Deputy Superintendent of Schools in charge of personnel for District 501.

This was a difficult time in the district. The NAACP brought in picketers from Kansas City who would come right into his office and cause a disturbance. They felt he wasn't hiring enough black teachers. They would charge that so many blacks had applied for jobs and were not hired. Some were bogus names, some had no teaching certificates. When they were qualified, he hired them, but qualified blacks were hard to find in any number. Pete traveled around the country trying to find more, but it was difficult.

This was also the time when the teachers decided to hire a negotiator to get their pay raised. Pete was appointed to represent the administration in these talks. The negotiator was an aggressive and difficult man. In previous years Pete had worked with the teachers to get pay raises and was very sympathetic to their needs. These new negotiations were very hard on his health and his family felt they led to his early demise. He retired July 31 1973.

Pete was president of the Topeka Teachers Association during 1949 and 1950 and served many years as the senior member of the judges panel for the annual Shawnee County Spelling Bee.

He served on the board of the Kansas State High Schools Activities Association, and was named to the selection committee of the Hall of Fame. After his death Pete was honored by being inducted into the Kansas State High Schools Activities Hall of Fame. His picture is on display with those of other recipients at the KSHSAA Building in Topeka.

Pete was a life member of the NEA, a member of the Kansas NEA and of Phi Delta Kappa education fraternity.

He was an active member of the First United Methodist church in Topeka and formerly served as chairman of the administrative board. He was a member of the Topeka Downtown Rotary Club and the board of Friends of the Zoo. He was also a member of the Senior Council of the Topeka Chamber of Commerce.

In 1974 Pete died unexpectedly at an Indianapolis, Indiana Holiday Inn. He and Myrle were staying there while visiting friends. After breakfast Pete returned to their room ad suffered an apparent heart attack. His funeral was held at the First United Methodist Church and burial followed in Memorial Park Cemetery, both in Topeka, Kansas.
