Notes for GRANVILLE JASPER BOATWRIGHT:

Granville Jasper Boatwright Family

Photo: Family photo found on myfamily.com and no names attached. Looks like the photo was taken abt 1897 before Archie Newton was born. My guess: Front has to be Sylvia, Mamie & Louise. Middle: Emma, Phoebe& Granville and Amos. Back: must be Sarah as she is the oldest girl and other girl is Mary Jane(far right). Remaining..who knows. First boy could be John Leroy because it looks like the older version that I have. Tall one maybe James V as his WWI draft discribes him as tall and slender, leaving Miles (second from the end on the right).

Granville Jasper BOATWRIGHT and Henry Newton BOATWRIGHT were twins.

Marriage: 25 Dec 1874, Polk County, Iowa (Source: Marriage record of Granville Jasper Boatwright, (Polk County Marriage Records, Book 1), Pg. 15, Granville J Boatwright/Phoebe Fox 24 Dec 1874.)

Alice Chapman Boatwright, who was born in Cresco, Howard Co., IA, came to Kansas in 1879 in a covered wagon with her parents. The family settled in Graham County and later moved to Belleville. She contracted polio when at the age of 16 months, which left her with a withered right arm. In spite of this handicap, she lived a full life. At the age of 26 Alice married Sam Boatwright and came to Atchison County.

She lacked one month of being 91 at her death and had remained active mentally and physically, taking care of her own flowers the summer of her death. Alice's funeral services were held at the Lancaster Presbyterian Church.

Known to his friends as "Tazzie", Jad celebrated 50 years of barbering in Denton, Kansas in April of 1952 and his friends presented him with a gold ring. He had purchased his shop from Albert Friend in April 1902 for $140 and set himself up in business - to stay, he said, until he found out whether he liked Denton or not. When Jad opened his shop a shave cost 10 cents, a haircut was 25 cents. One evening some of the old-timers were gathered in his shop, as they so often did, and asked him 'what things had changed since he came.' He thought the most important was the Denton school system, which had changed from a two room, two teacher frame building to the two comfortable, up-to-date brick buildings housing the grades and the high school, with eight teachers for the two schools. But the one of most vital importance to him, personally, was the change from oil lamps to electricity.

Jad had quite a trade cutting women's hair, but after the permanent wave, the beauty shops got his women customers.

When asked who his most famous customers were, he thought for a moment. "Well, once there was Harry Woodring. Then there was Matt Eylar, used to own the Eylar ranch, and was a vice-president of the Underwood Typewriter Co. And, oh, yes, a multimillionaire came in once for a haircut - only I didn't know it at the time or I might have charged more."

He was ill with the flu and complications for 2 weeks before he died in a St. Joe hospital.

Jarard Leroy Boatwright Gravestone OBITUARY:
Jad Leroy Boatwright, son of Daniel and Martha Boatwright, was born in Runnells, Iowa, February 13, 1879 and died at St. Joseph Hospital, St. Joseph, MO, January 23 1953 at the age of 73, 14 months and 10 days.

When a small child, he moved with his parents to a farm near Effingham, Kansas. He attended grade school at Maple Grove and Des Moines Barber College.

On December 31, 1902 he was united in marriage to Nellie Putnam and to this union 4 children were born. One son, Donald, preceded him in death in 1949.

They spent their entire married life in Denton, celebrating their golden wedding anniversary last December 31st.

He was a barber in Denton for nearly 51 years. When he celebrated his 50th year of barbering last April 4th, his friends of the community presented him with a gold ring as a token of their appreciation.

He was a member of the Christian Church of Lancaster and the Modern Woodman Lodge of which he was secretary for 34 years.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Berneice Park of Leona and Mrs. Mildred Chaney of Denton; a son, Paul Boatwright of Topeka; six grandchildren and one great grandson; two brothers, John Boatwright of Des Moines, Iowa and Fred Boatwright of Colfax, Iowa.

Pallbearers were Jim Gillen, Chas. Gish, Stanley Hanson, Walter Triplett, Ray Kessler and Alva Roberts.

Funeral services were held at the Sawin-Dyer chapel in Atchison. Interment was in the Denton Cemetery."
