Notes for ROBERT THOMAS BOATWRIGHT:

Robert Thomas Boatwright

Neighboring Notables by Helen Ross
The Hickory Daily Record
September 8, 1955

Thirteen years ago when Robert T. Boatwright of Conover went to the First Federal Savings and Loan association as its executive secretary, the assets of the institution were a little over half a million dollars.

As of now they are right at four and one half million dollars. Although the Conover Savings and Loan is the youngest in the country, from the standpoint of years of organization, its growth has been a rather astonishing thing in the past decade.

Mr. Boatwright attributes it to a number of things – such as continued prosperity, the kindness of the people of the area, a growing desire for home ownership on the part of many. His associates and his friends, however, also give him much credit for the guidance and wisdom he has exercised since he became connected with the Conover institution.

He was one of the initial group of Conover and Catawba county citizens who met to organize the People’s Building and Loan of Catawba, Claremont and Conover in 1932. At that time he was working with the Citizens Bank of Conover, with never an idea that some day he might be the vice-president and executive secretary of the agency he helped to organize.

Proud of Building

Robert Thomas Boatwright Gravestone

He is, along with other officers of the Savings and Loan, very proud of the modern new office building now housing First Federal of Conover. The building was among the top ten in North Carolina to receive an architectural award recently as one of the best designed structures in the past ten years. Mr. Boatwright all but strokes the certificate his Savings and Loan received.

Bob Boatwright is a native of Hickory – was born May 13, 1904 on old Shell street, the son of the late W. L. and Evana Thrasher Boatwright. His father established the first bottling works in Hickory – the Pepsi-Cola bottling works. His father also erected a drugstore still in operation across from the Hickory post office and the first Five and Ten Cent store, located where Belk’s store is presently situated. He sold the location to Belk’s, and gave up most of his business enterprises because of ill health.

Mr. Boatwright attended North school, now Oakwood, in Hickory and was a member of the first class to attend the old West High school, where he graduated. He went to Wake Forest college one year, and to Lenoir Rhyne one year. Then he decided to stop his educational endeavors and start making money, if he could. He worked for three years with Jones Shuford Furniture store in Hickory.

Took Business Course

But, he said, he saw that he needed more training and more education in order to further himself, so he stopped work and went to Kings Business College in Charlotte. Figures (the kind you put on paper) had always held a special attraction for him. It was while he was attending Kings that he met Mary Estelle Alexander, who lived in Charlotte. They were married Dec. 14, 1934, and now have two children, Robert Sylvester and Mary Alexander.

While he was attending Kings College, he received an offer to come into the old Consolidated Trust company at Hickory. This he did, when he finished at the business college, and stayed with the company until it merged with the First National Bank. He remembers when the company was constructing a new building and the temporary offices that were set up in the Hotel Hickory while construction was in progress.

He came to the Citizens Bank at Conover in 1932 and remained there until 1942 when he succeeded Glenn Rowe, Sr., as secretary of the Building and Loan.

Mr. Boatwright finds a great deal of satisfaction in the work he is doing and has no regrets about his choice of a profession. But, he laughs as he remembers a school superintendent in Hickory. “Banking’s alright for experience, but I would not stay in it more than a year.”

Interested in Local Affairs

The Conover Savings and Loan secretary takes a keen interest in civic and municipal affairs as well as church activities. He is now serving as a member of the Conover Planning and Zoning commission and has held membership on the board since it was organized. Conover may be small, he says, but he believes some of the policies that have been instituted there will prove of benefit on the future growth of the town, which he is firmly convinced is coming.

He finds satisfaction in his work on the planning and zoning commission in the knowledge that things done now will prove of value in the future in that the town will have had an orderly and systematic growth with proper provision made for streets and districts in the town.

He was a member and former president of the Conover Men’s club, later disbanded to become a part of the Conover Lions club. He has been much interested in Boy Scout work in Conover and while he was president of the Men’s club was instrumental in getting a Scout cabin in Conover which still is used. He has taken part in hikes, and other outdoor activities of the Scouts with a great deal of relish. He is a member of the Catawba Executives club and a former member of the Newton Kiwanis club.

Last year, Mr. Boatwright was co-chairman in Conover with the Rev. Lonnie Carpenter, of the Red Cross fund raising drive. His town led others in the lower part of the county in reaching its assigned quotas. On all other drives and community endeavors of a similar nature, Mr. Boatwright has been ready to take whatever role in which he may be of the most benefit.

Choir Director

As a member of the First Baptist church of Newton, he served as choir director for a number of years. He was clerk of the South Fork Baptist association for four years from 1945 through 1948 and is now a trustee of the Association. He is former deacon in the Newton church and has served as superintendent of the adult department of the Sunday school. At present, he is keenly interested in the church’s building program as he has been for a number of years. He thinks the church needs to redouble its efforts now in its building program.

In his own business circle, Mr. Boatwright has been recognized by members of his profession. He served one term as president of Group Four of the North Carolina Savings and Loan association League in 1951-52. Through the years he has held membership on important State league committees and in 1953-54 was appointed a member of the United States Savings and Loan League.

He says he was “too young and too old” to have been in service during any of the wars in his lifetime.

Mr. Boatwright is the “middle one” of five children. His sisters are Mrs. Henry Wise of Hickory and Mrs. C. O. Christianson of Fair Hope, Ala., and his brothers are William Harold Boatwright of Shelby and Max Grayson Boatwright of Danville, Virginia.
