Notes for REUBIN BOATRIGHT:

Reubin and Lacy were charter members of Hawhammock Baptist Church, located five miles east of Swainsboro on the Canoochee Road. This church was constituted Sunday, July 23, 1842, and Reubin was elected the first deacon of the church and was duly ordained, serving in that capacity until his death. He was the owner of several rather large tracts of land in Emanuel County on whichhe had two or three farms. He was granted by the state 708 acres in 1837 and 1000 acres in 1836. His other lands were bought from individuals. his home was located on the Blun-Modec road, two miles east of Hwy 556...this property is now owned partly by a grandson, Willie R. Boatright, and partly by Rev Frank L Grinson, a great grandson and a former pastor of Hawhammock Church. He died in 1878 of injuries in an accident on his farm.

He and his two wives and many of the family are buried at Hawhammock Church.

Reubin died of injuries received in an accident on his farm at the age of 84.

Evidence gathered from Deeds around the time of death of Nancy Weathers Boatright, 1837, involving the description of land owned by Samuel Boatright and wife Nancy Weathers in 1820. Three sons , James, John and S.W.(Samuel Washington) morgaged their share of land to pay debts.

The 1820 deed, dated 5 Nov 1820, was registered in Mecklenburg County, NC, Deed book 19 page 252 on # Jan 1821.

Samuel and Nancy sold 170 acres on King Branch of Shugar Creek adj. Barnett, Cook, Smart, Dr. Stephen Fox, and Col A. Alexander to Jordan Williamson for $1000. Later mortgages describe the same location.

Nancy was left app. 140 acres in Reuben Weathers Will in Mecklenburg County, NC in 1806.

Notes for SAMUEL WASHINGTON BOATWRIGHT:

Served in CSA, 37th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry

37th Infantry Regiment, organized by Colonel C.C. Lee, was assembled at High Point, North Carolina, in November, 1861. The men were raised in the counties of Buncombe, Watauga, Mecklenburg, Wake, Ashe, Alexander, and Gaston. The unit fought at New Bern, then moved to Virginia in the psring of 1862. It was assigned to General Branch's and Lane's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. The 37th saw action at Hanover Court House and particpated in many campaigns of the army from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor. It continued the fight in the Petersburg trenches and around Appomattox. This regiment reported 125 casualties during the Seven Days' Battles, 15 at Cedar Mountain, 81 at Second Manassas, 93 at Fredericksburg, and 235 at Chancellorsville. Of the 379 engaged at Gettysburg, more than thirty percent were disabled. It surrendered 10 officers and 98 men. The field officers were Colonels William M. Barbour and Charles C. Lee; Lieutenant Colonel John B. Ashcraft, Charles N. Hickerson, and William G. Morris; and Majors Jackson L. Bost, Owen N. Brown, John G. Bryan, Rufus M. Rankin, and William R. Rankin.

In the 1850 Steele Creek District, Mecklenburg County NC Census, Samuel is indicated to be 47 years old. However, examining the actual Census image, the "47" could also be a "41". In 1860 in the Western Division, Mecklenburg County Census he is 51, in 1870 in the Sharon District he is 62 and in 1880 in the Pineville District he is 71.
