Eldon, attended school a Bosqueville, and attended college at Alvarado. He was a cowboy and later a rancher in Nolan County, TX. He was in the mercantile business in Runnels County. He married Fanny (Frances) Anne McAulay in Bell County, where they had a mercantile store. Their children Fred, Will, Claude, Ida, Carl and Frances Rachel were born there. They moved to Runnels County, where children Roy and Lena were born. In the late 1880's they moved to Mitchell County, and began ranching. Their children Myrtle and Mody were born there.

In 1897 he bought a ranch in SW Nolan County, where they lived and all the boys helped with the ranch work. The ranch was on the wagon road from San Angelo to Sweetwater. Since San Angelo didn't have a railroad at that time, the ranch house was almost a "hotel"; people stopped on the way up for lunch and on the way back for lodging. In 1907 they bought land near Maryneal and built a ten room house there for the family. The married boys continued to live on the ranch. Fanny wanted all her children to stay close by and she gave each of the ten a big lot close to Maryneal. Some of them built houses and lived there for a while, but in a few years they had all moved away. The ranch was sold in 1918 and Eldon and Fanny moved to Abilene with daughters Frances and Myrtle. Eldon was a rancher until the end. After he was virtually bed-ridden he would say, "If you will saddle me a gentle horse, I'll ride over and see if Alexander is still interested in buying those heifers.

From " The First 100 years of Nolan County"

Eldon and Frances Ann Mcauley Boatright Gravestone

The Boatright school was started for the 1912-13 term. The building was a small rent house owned by Eldon Boatright. It was moved to a corner of a section of land owned by Will Boatright near Maryneal. The corners adjacent were the Compton Place, Brannon, and Rock Springs.

The first teacher was Johnny Floyd. Other teachers were Doris Musgrove, Ann Campbell, Eula Abner, Miss Brennan, and Arethea McKenzie.

The only pupils the first year were Irene and Viola Boatright. Viola left there during the 1917- 1918 term. It consolidated with Maryneal in 1920.

Eldon is found in 1880 census of Coleman Co., TX. Vol. 6, Ed 42, Sheet 18, line 3 Mr. Boatright (a man about 5 ft. tall) was one of the "biggest" steer men in the county. (Grandfather of Jake, who lives in Sweetwater. Sears sold him many bunches of big steers from home ranch in Mulberry Canjon and drove them to western Nolan or Mitchell County. In 1921 nearly all cattle people went broke.

Notes for JOHN SAMUEL BOATRIGHT:

John Samuel Boatright Family

John Samuel Boatright came to Oklahoma in 1889 because of the Featherston's living here and started to work for Dr. Bond. He later operated a livery stable in Hartshorne with his brother-inlaw, James E. Featherston. The major portion of their business was furnishing pit mules for the mines. Most of the mules came from Texas. John was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister. He was moving cattle from one pasture to another in 1894, when he caught pneumonia and died. He is buried in Featherston, OK.

John Samuel Boatright is brother to Irene Uzeda Boatright (my great-great-grandmother). The children are Guy (Augustus), Rachel and Jess (Jessie) Boatright. The picture is probably dated around late 1889-1890 because Jess (the youngest) was born January 1888 and their younger brother didn't come along until June 1891 (Daniel Thomas, named after his grandfather). They made a move from Texas to Indian Territory (1889) during this time. John died five years after they arrived of illness at the age of 40, leaving his wife Mattie with 4 chldren, ages 10, 8, 6, and 3. Source: Debbie Nafzger

Notes for HARRIETT CATHERINE WILSON:

Harriett Catherine Wilson Boatright Marker

Aunt "Kate" was born near Macon, Bibb County, GA and arrived in Texas with her parents ca. 1872, possibly living in Tennessee a few years. She claimed to be part (1/16) Indian. After she and Tom were separated (grass widow), she and Eva lived with Ray and Ola at various times. She raised white Wyandotte chickens and sold fryers. During the 1930's she had her own home with about five acres of pasture south of Hartshorne, kept her own cow and had her own garden.

The letter is dated Nov. 25, 1949 and addressed to Mr. R.B. Boatright, Cushing, Oklahoma:

Dear Mr. Boatright:

John Boatright of Odessa, Texas sent your letter of Oct. 25 on to his father, J.W. Boatright of Brownwood, Texas. Today J.W. brought it on out to Mother to get more information in reguard to the family. My Mother is Mrs. Irene Boatright Featherston and she of the two surviving member of the older Boatrights in our family. She is the great aunt of the John Boatright you wrote in Odessa. And since she knows more of the family than most of them, they ask that we write you and give what information she has about her family. Mother is 88 years old.

My mother's grandfather was named John Samuel Boatright and lived Alabama and possibly in Mississippi part of his life. He had at least 8 children but Mother is not sure of any of the names except for her father, Daniel Thomas and his brother Ed. However she knows that her father had six sisters.

Mother's father, the Daniel Thomas named above came to Texas from Alabama about 1850. He had married Rachel Lawlerin 1846. To them were born seven children, five of which lived to be grown, married and have children. They are Eldon, the father of J.W. and married Mattie Featherston and left four children(Guy, Jessie, Rachel and Daniel Thomas). The son of Guy named Daniel Thomas lives in McAlester, Oklahoma.

She say that her father's uncle Thomas Boatright came to Texas even before her father did. He had a grant in Dewitt's Colony in the early day of Texas settlement. She think he lived in Mississippi before coming to Texas. But that is about the extent of her information about the kin back in the Old Southern States.

Mother's father, the above named Daniel Thomas Boatright was born in 1819, married Rachael Lawler in 1846 and lived in Alabama until about 1850. They came to Texas and settled in Bell County not far from the present town of Belton. They had seven children, but only 5 lived to maturity. They were Eldon, John Samuel, Louisa, Elizabeth M. (Calvin McCauley), Daniel Thomas Jr., and Irene Uzela (James E. Featherston) Mother's father, Daniel Thomas went to the Civil War and never got home. She was only about 3 months old when he left so does not remember anything about the family except what grandmother told her. Mother and Daniel Thomas Jr. are all that are left of this family. Daniel Thomas lives at Hartshorne, OK. He has two sons and two daughters who live Okla. And a great number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The John Boatright at Odessa is a grandson of Mother's oldest brother, Eldon. This brother had 10 children-- John William (J. W.), Roy, Carl, Fred, Mody, Celena, Frances, Ida, Myrtle, and Loyd. All the boys married and all have children except Fred. Most of them have grand children. Her brothr John Samuel was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister. He had two boys and two girls, Guy, Daniel Thomas, Jesse M (Norris) and Rachel M. (Timmerman). I believe he has one grandson, Dan Tom, who lives at McAlester, OK now.

Mother's sister married Calvin McCauley. They have a daughter who is a lawyer (Mrs. J.W. Hulsey) in McAlester, OK. There were two boys in this sister's family. Allison and Daniel Levi. This D.L. lives at Muscogee, Oklahoma, I think.

Sincerely

Lou R. Featherston
