John Doss Lafayette Boatwright

Born August 31, 1830 in Stokes, North Carolina. Migrated to Calloway County, Kentucky before the Civil War. He was a farmer, stockman, and slave owner. He died August 2, 1905.

He married Rebecca Henslee on December 21, 1853 in Kentucky. She was the daughter of Joab Henslee (1796-1878) and Nancy Justice Henslee (1800-1885). Rebecca came to Kentucky with Boatwright. She died September 29, 1905.

They are both buried in the Faucett Cemetery at Russell’s Chapel Church outside of Murray, Kentucky.

According to his service records,James M. Boatright joined the Confederate Army on May 21, 1861. He was a Private in Company B, 3rd Regiment, Clack's Infantry, Tennessee Volunteers at Camp Cheatham, Tennessee. He was captured during the Battle at Fort Dolenson on February 18, 1862. He was a prisoner of war housed at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois, according to the Prisoner of War Roll dated September 7, 1862. He was later taken to Vicksburg, Mississippi along with many other prisoners to be exchanged for Union soldiers. He became ill while stationed in Dalton, Georgia. His diagnosis was Pthtisis Pulmonalis, the medical term used then for pulmonary tuberculosis. James was ill for about six months, when, after being examined by doctors, was declared unfit for service. He was discharged on March 18, 1864. He died on April 20, 1864, a month after his discharge. James never married and was not quite 26 years old when he died. He is buried in the Boatright section of the Boatright, Brownlow, Wagstaff Cemetery on Lynn Creek Road, Old Lynnville, Tennessee.

Served in CSA, 6th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (Wheeler's). 6th Cavalry Regiment, formerly Wheeler's 1st Tennessee Cavalry, was organized in May, 1862. It was assigned to F.C. Armstrong's, H.B. Davidson's, Humes', and H.M. Ashby's Brigade. The unit participated in the operations in North Mississippi during the balance of 1862 and in January, 1863, contained 430 officers and men. It went on to fight at Chickamauga, skirmished in Middle Tennessee, then was active in the Atlanta Campaign. Later the regiment saw action in various engagements in North Alabama and Middle Tennesee, moved to South Carolina, and in 1865 joined the Army of Tennessee. After fighting at Averysboro and Bentonville, it was included in the surrender on April 26. The field officers were Colonels Jacob B. Biffle and James T. Wheeler, Lieutenant Colonels W.W. Gordon and James H. Lewis, and Majors Joseph J. Dobbins and William S. Hawkins.

Had no children, but Reecie Lee Boatright and Katherine Washington Boatright, children of Thomas Reece Boatright, were in this household in the 1900 Giles County, Tennessee census.

I certify on honor that I have carefully examined said officer and find him totally unfit for the service of the United States as a soldier consequent from hydvocele which disease he contracted while in the United States service and in the line of duty. He is also laboring under "fehthisis pulmonalis" in its first stage with occasional hemorrage of the lungs which disease was contacted previous to his entering the Unites States service, he is also in my opinion unfit for the Invalid Corps.
