Reuben Baker Boatwright, the second son of Reuben and Mary Boatwright, was born 23rd day of January 1831, on or near the line of Cumberland and Buckingham. He joined the church, Mt. Zion, at 17 years of age. Rev. Wm. H. Taylor predicted at his baptism that he was to be a preacher.

At about 18 he was offered a position as deputy clerk of Cumberland. He served in this capacity of 3 1/2 years. He left to go to school to an academy, run by Jack Berryman, a cousin, and a graduate of Columbian College, Washington - from thence he went to Richmond College during the sessions of ?55 and ?56 - ?56 and ?57. His ordination was called for by the Mt. Zion Church in 1858 in order to serve Enon church as pastor. This call he accepted and continued as pastor for 18 months. In September 1859, the Theological Seminary opened in Greenville, S.C., and he went and remained one session and on his return called to the Scottsville Baptist Church.

Reuben Baker Boatwright Gravestone In the spring of ?61 he joined as a private the 46th Va. Regiment as (unreadable) for 12 months, but during the time was elected as a chaplain of said regiment. His health failing he did not accept the appointment of Chaplain, but returned and preached and taught school - soldier?s children during the balance of the war.

On the 5th of Sept. 1865 he married Miss Elizabeth M. Woodruff of Cumberland Co., Va., the daughter of Deacon Wilson Woodruff and Miss J. F. Godsey.

A year after his marriage Rev. Boatwright accepted appointment by the Virginia Baptist Mission Board as pastor of the Lewisburg field of churches in Greenbrier and Monroe Counties, West Virginia for the thirty four weeks remaining that year. He found few Baptists there and he was considerably discouraged with the conditions he found. However, he was determined to rely upon the strength of God and push ahead.

At his cottage home in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, Reuben Baker and his wife, Maria had their first child, Frederic William Boatwright, who was born on January 28, 1868. His name was spelled "Frederick" but years later he changed it to "Frederic". Fourteen months later Reuben Baker resigned his pastorate in order to accept a call to the pastorate at the Marion Baptist Church, Marion, Virginia. He arrived in Marion around March 28, 1870. The Church was organized in 1845 and at the time met in the old Smyth County Courthouse. In 1870 Marion was a small town with 1,200 inhabitants. Ministers of the Baptist General Association of Virginia for that year reported that the Church had 34 members and had received 7 additions by baptism.

In 1883 tge family, now grown in number to include three daughters and two sons, moved to Powhatan County, where Reuben Baker had accepted the call to Petersville and Fine Creek churches. Dr. Cornelius Tyree, the former pastor, had urged his friend in Marion to make the change.

The said R. B. and E. M. Boatwright have five living children, viz.; Frederick William Boatwright, president of Richmond College, Martha Susan Clark, Mary Booth, Sarah Gayle and John B. Boatwright.

"A Long Life Well Lived"

Source: Newspaper article - provided by Ruby Pearl Apperson

Tuesday, January 23d (1906), was the 75th birthday of Brother R. B. Boatwright, who now resides at Wealthia, Buckingham county, Va. The anniversary was brightened by many letters received from friends in Virginia and other States, and surviving fellow students in college and seminary.

Three Generations of Boatwrights: Reuben Baker Boatwright, son Frederic William
Boatwright and Grandson, Frederic Leroy Boatwright For nearly fifty years Brother Boatwright has been a faithful and successful pastor in Virginia. Only last summer was he compelled on account of his infirmities to give up his last pastorate. He preached his first sermon on the third Sunday in March 1857, in the First African church, of Richmond, where he supplied for the pastor, President Robert Ryland. Since that time he has been pastor of churches in Buckingham, in Cumberland, in Scottsville, in Greenbrier county, W. Va., in Marion, in Bristol, in Powhatan, Fluvanna, and Bedford counties, and finally on the same field where his regular service began. During the early part of the Civil War, and so long as his health permitted, he was chaplain of the 46th Virginia Regiment. His longest pastorate was in Marion, Va., where he served the churches of the town and county for seventeen years. Twice he left this field, but in answer to earnest calls returned, after intervals of twelve months, and did the best work of his life. As moderator of the Lebanon Association, and as a convervative leader of the denomination, he accomplished an enduring work on what was a difficult field.

After all, perhaps the best service he has rendered was the giving of his noble son, Professor F. W. Boatwright, to Richmond College and to the world.

Brother Boatwright is now in feeble health, but still strong in faith. He cannot now travel and preach as in other years, but is still strong enough to move about the house and farm. His life has been a benediction, and I trust he may yet be spared for years to the hundreds and thousands who know and love him. A.E.D.

Excerpts from The Religious Herald - October 23, 1915 - Judge A. P. Cole

"My first acquaintance with Bro. Boatwright was when he came from the White Sulphur Springs to take charge of the Marion Baptist Church in 1869....The membership numbered about twenty. I was one of the number and remained a member during his seventeen years pastorate. When he left the Church finally in 1883, the Church had grown in numbers to something over 100, exclusive of about twenty members dismissed to form a new church, Cedar Bluff....After some years, as he became assured of the confidence and leading brethern of other churches, he projected the idea of building a parsonage in a better portion of town. It met with favor, and through his personal efforts the necessary funds were raised and the parsonage built. It was an unpretentious frame building of six rooms. I lived next door neighbor. In this humble parsonage all his children were born and reared, except the oldest; and it might be said he was too. He was drowned in a mill-race in Marion, but after strenuous efforts was brought back to life. It might with some truth be said that our families were one, so intimate we were. My children and his children, my wife and his wife, he and I, all mixed up in daily companionship. My garden became a kind of theological arena. The law and the gospel met in friendly controversy over many passages of Scripture of doubtful construction and different interpretation. The gospel was thus helped by seeing both the negative and affirmative side of the question. The law was instructed, enlightened and guided to a more rational conclusion."

"Our brother was not only beloved by his own members and the members of other churches, but was highly respected by all the citizens of the town. He and his wife were welcome guests at the social affairs of the best people in all the churches..."

8-11. CORNELIA PENICK BOATWRIGHT (REUBEN8, REUBEN7, JOHN6, BENONI5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born 13 Apr 1845 in New Canton, Buckingham County, Virginia, and died 07 Aug 1931 in Hanover County, Virginia. She married ANDREW PATTERSON COLE, son of SAMPSON COLE and ASENATH WILLIAMS. He was born 23 Nov 1837 in Smyth County, Virginia, and died 19 Sep 1917 in Buckingham County, Virginia.

Notes for CORNELIA PENICK BOATWRIGHT:

Cornelia Penick Boatwright By a deed dated March 7, 1899, and recorded in Buckingham Circuit Court, Judge Cole and Cornelia Boatwright Cole purchased a farm known as Mount Ida that was located about three miles from Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Mt. Ida was built about 1795 on high ground overlooking the low grounds of the James River. The home was enlarged about 1850. The farm was composed of several hundred acres of land. It was listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register in 1986, and later was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house was described as one of the most important 18th century plantations in Virginia.

Mt. Ida is no longer situated at its original location. It has now been transported section by section and piece by piece to its present location between Scottsville and Charlottesville on the opposite side of the James River. It has meticulously been restored to its original grandeur. Today it has over 12,000 square feet of floor space including porches and decks on over 400 acres of land and a mile of frontage on the Hardware River.

In the 2003 September issue of Southern Living Magazine, Mt. Ida was chosen as one of the six award winners in the magazine's 15th Annual Design Competition.

Notes for POINDEXTER PENICK BOATWRIGHT:

Poindexter P. Boatwright Gravestone

Poindexter P. Boatwright was the son of Rueben and Nancy Anderson Boatwright. On his tombstone is written: Sgt. Co. C, 3 Regt. Va. Res. CSA.

The following notes were written by Flossie B. Hudgins, neice of Poindexter, and provided by Ruby Pearl Apperson:

This I wrote while Uncle Deek was well able to tell all correctly.

Many, many times have I heard him retell of his army duty. He was proud that he served in the regular army.

The information on the Marker (Mount Zion Church cemetery) on his grave may not be the same as this.

Record of Army Life of P. P. Boatwright:

Mustered into service at Lynchburg with Company C, 44th Virginia Regular - March 1864.

Left Lynchburg for the High Bridge - drilled here until the (end of) winter.

From here went to Staunton River Bridge.

Poindexter returned to the home of his father after the Civil War and commenced farming. He married Ellen J. Hudgins on December 19, 1876. Ellen lived at the Hudgins farm which was located nearby in the neighborhood. She was incapacitated physically for the last six years of her life.

Poindexter either purchased or built a home in the area of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. If you went northward a short distance from the church towards New Canton, you would come to a dirt road heading into the "old Reuben Boatwright, Sr. original home place". If you proceeded a short distance down the dirt road, you would come to the location of the Poindexter Boatwright home.

Poindexter and Ellen did not have any children. There was a young lady four years old named Flossie near Scottsville who needed a home. She was brought to the Boatwrights. They later legally adopted her. She took care of them until they died. Following their deaths, Flossie stayed with Lemuel W. and Ada Apperson who lived across the main road at Mount Calm.

Dr. James K. Anderson and Dr. Paul Hall, who had close ties to Buckingham County, and who were founders of Westbrook Sanatorium in Richmond, secured a job for Flossie at Westbrook. She was a hard worker and eventually became an Registered Practical Nurse at Westbrook. She later married George R. Hudgins, a widower of Fluvanna County. All who knew Flossie attested that she was a good, honest, kind and hard working person.
