9-1406. ROBERT P. "BUCKFOOT" BOATRIGHT (ROBERT M.9, LENEARCE BOLIN8, JOHN JOSEPH7, DANIEL6, BENONI5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born 19 Feb 1859 in Franklin County, Missouri, and died 25 May 1904 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.

Notes for ROBERT P. "BUCKFOOT" BOATRIGHT:

Robert P. Boatright Gravestone

From the Webb City Daily Register Newspaper: Robert Boatright died in K.C. Was the only living child of a family of 8 children. His father died about a year ago.

Notes from T. W. Cartmill of Santa Anna, California:

Robert P. "Buckfoot" Boatright was born 19 February 1859. He died of pneumonia, on 25 May 1904 at Kansas City in Jackson County, Missouri. The compiler has not yet been able to determine if he ever married.

"Buckfoot" was a handsome man, six feet tall, 190 pounds, with raven black hair, rather dark blue eyes, who walked like a king, as quiet, dignified, and kind hearted with his friends.

Tradition has it that when he was sixteen years old, he walked into a court room in St. Louis, Missouri, and decapitated a Negro who had killed his elder brother. It is said that his father spent a fortune to recover "Buckfoot's" freedom.

"Buckfoot" operated a game house, poker and dice, in the old Parker building at the corner of Allen and Daughtery Streets in Webb City, Missouri. He also operated a boxing show over in a building across the alley from "Ben and Bill's Saloon", while at the same time he also operated a foot racing racket.

He gathered several of the fastest 100 yard dash men in the world, such as "Big Bud" Gillette, a man named Fields, and "Crow" Robbins. All of these men were said to able to run 100 yards in less than 10 seconds.

When "Buckfoot" died in Kansas City, Missouri, his body was brought to Webb City, Missouri for burial. A cry was raised that the corpse was fake, and a Mr. Hi Curry, Mr. Davis' attorney, obtained a court order and took Doctor Cheneworth and Harry Pryatt, the United States Marshall to the Boatright home where they opened the coffin and examined the corpse. They all knew "Buckfoot" well and stated that the corpse was his.

"Buckfoot" was buried on Decoration Day of 1904 and a procession headed by a loud playing band went through the town on Allen Street south to the cemetery and placed the coffin in the family vault.

Many people still felt it was not "Buckfoot's" body that was buried and one man insisted that the inscription on his vault confirmed this. Mr. Cartmill once examined the vault out of curiosity, and found that it read in part, "not dead, but gone...".

Notes from "The Promise Land" by Norval M. Matthews:

This was Allen Street. This was part of Webb City. Some, there were, who said the east side was the wrong side of the street. Others disagreed. One thing is sure; the length and breadth of this famous street provided entertainment for the most cosmopolitan, both rich and poor. The west side provided the genteel items for everyday living. Intermingled with these were the luxury stores demanded by the newly rich. However, on the west side of the street things were recorded which were not always of an orthodox nature. The well capitalized bank across the street, on the west side of Allen Street, loaned huge sums of money to the mine operators, to the grand stores which flanked each side of the beautiful entrance, and to the individual miners who could establish credit. But the ramifications of the loan department had other obligations as well. There were other activities in the boom town which needed finance. The Boatright boys were a good example. When they needed cash to carry on their profitable activities, the bank obligingly helped the properous depositor. The bank officials maintained a "hands-off" policy toward the intricate management of the Boatright business, supplying only the hugh sums of money necessary to finance their many operations.

Who were the Boatrights? Some of the old timers said they were just ordinary people similar to many of the "get rich quick" men and women who came to the rip-snorting, hell raising mining town. Current events of the day recorded colorful episodes attributed to them that shook the community to its foundation. The mining bonanza, which gave Webb City its beginning, brought with it an assortment of varied and sometimes strangely gifted talents. The Boatrights fell into this category. They possessed a talent for gaining confidence among the miners and an ability to profit from the friendship.

The populace of Webb City of this period required excitement, gauged accordingly to the social standing of the persons involved. This excitement and entertainment was forth coming for the lowest on the run of the social ladder to the highest, and sometimes the entertainment of the day became intermingled, and those on the rungs of the ladder were no longer recognizable as to social standing.

Under these circumstances the Webb City Sporting Club was organized by men made newly rich by mining the easily accessible lead and zinc ore. The purpose of the club was to provide relaxation for the pent up nerves of the mining barons. They entrusted the operation of the club to one Mr. Boatright who apparently had an unlimited supply of nefarious confidence schemes from which to draw.

Mr. Boatright surrounded himself with trusted cronies, and it soon became apparent that other activities appealed to him more than gentle relaxation of tired mining men. Thus it came to pass that the respected Webb City Sporting Club became headquarters for the most notorious confidence gang in the entire country. They became known far and wide as the Buckfoot gang, because their chief activity was foot racing.

The Buckfoot gang were originators of confidence tactics, although they were not too proud to practice any of the other time-worn methods; but their chief stock in trade was foot racing. This sport appealed to the hard-rock miners, and they patronized it. Thousands of dollars were waggered on the outcome of a single foot race.

The Buckfoot gang had the fastest sprinter in the country. His exact time for the one hundred yard dash was known only to them. When they could get legitimate bets they would bet on their man. When the reputation of their man became too well known for bonafide bets, their cronies bet against him; the champion sprinter could obligingly lose.

They bet on anything, if it was a sure thing for them. Take the case of the municipal election; there were two candidates; support for the two reached a very high pitch. This excitement became greater when large amounts of money was wagered on the outcome of the two. The Buckfoot gang conveniently divided their loyalty between the two candidates and placed lavish sums on each man. The stakes reached staggering amoungs and the matter of someone to act as the stake holder became urgent. In the Buckfoot office was a large safe with armed guards representing all parties concerned. The guards stationed there were ordered to remain until the votes were counted and the winners announced. The election results were made known about 3:00 a.m. The winners of the bets were elated. The combination on the big safe was worked, and the large door swung open under the surveillance of the armed guards. The money had disappeared! Pandemonium broke loose, fights ensued, the place was wrecked, but the money was not found. Only years later did the secret leak out - the safe had a door in the back as well as the front.

Foot racing which gave them their name remained their favorite vocation, and it was a foot race which brought about their downfall. A suit, Hobbs vs Boatright et al, finally reached the Supreme Court of Missouri, Division 1, March 30, 1906. It was probably one of the strangest cases ever heard before this learned tribunal, and no doubt it was the "wackiest". Here is the charge: Gaming - cheating, Recovery of Money lost - Pari Delieto.

"Where plaintiff was induced to bet a large sum of money on a foot race on the representation that the result of the race was fixed in advance in favor of the person whom he betted, when in fact a gang of conspirators had fixed the race against him as one of a series of plots of the same nature, he will be permitted to recover the amount lost, though in the particular transaction he was equally guilty with the conspirator."

Here we have the Buckfoot gang double crossing a co-conspirator. The co-conspirator was a wealthy cattle raiser from Oklahoma who entered into a "phoney" race with the gang. For his cooperation in securing bets, the Buckfoot gang told this partner he would be reimbursed for all the money be bet plus a profit. They double crossed him, and he sued. Only pity could be expressed for the court in trying to unravel the dilemma. Here are some briefs from the court records:

"The difficult question in the case is upon which side of the controversy should the law of public policy be applied. -But here the guild of the parties is not considered equal to the higher right of the public; and the guilty party to whom the relief is granted is simply the instrument by which the public is served."

This was the last episode in the history of the Buckfoot gang. Before their exit they helped Webb City to become known for something more than the zinc capital of the world.
