Notes for HIRAM WOODY BOATRIGHT:

Hiram Woody Boatright

All my memories of Grampa Boatright are wonderful. As a very young child I recall following him around grandmother Ball's home. He knew how to entertain children. Good thing, too since he had so many of them... I'm not sure but somewhere around 12-14 of them. He'd twine his fingers together and fold them inside his palms except for his index fingers with which made a steeple and he'd recite a little rhyme, "I went up to the heeple steeple. There I met with a heaps o' people. Some was whiter and some was blacker and some was the color of chewin' t'backer." Somewhere in the recitation he would turn his hands "inside out" revealing the "heaps of people". He would laugh and I would too while riding on his foot.

He told me how the Devil got started by being a bad boy who refused to mind and getting so mad that he stomped a hole in the ground and went straight to hell where he set up shop.

Hiram Woody Boatright and Mary Sarah Chance, 50th wedding anniversary

Hiram was a Baptist preacher who also farmed. He remained in good health until his last month. He was living across the road from me when he died at age 93.

Hiram had a Hamilton railroad watch, which I fancied. When he died, one of his scores of grandchildren received it. I was a great grand child. I understood but I had to have one so a few year later I bought my own and still have it today. It reminds me of Grampa Boatright.

One of my favorite stories about Granmpa Boatright concerned his life as a young married man. Bear in mind that he married December 4, 1884 and he was a poor farmer. He and his bride lived in a rough house. He and Mary had gone to bed under cloudy skies and Mary was concerned about the weather so she asked Hiram to get up and see what it looked like. In the dark, and maybe a little disoriented from sleep, he confused the pantry door with the door to the outside, opened the pantry and stuck his head in. His report on the weather must have given his wife some temporary confusion but it gave his family a good story to tell for generations. He said, "It's dark as Egypt and smells like cheese".

Hiram Woody and Mary Sarah Chance Boatright Gravestone Grampa had several brothers but seemed to be particularly close to one they called "Doc". He and Doc were plowing one hot summer day and the breeze would have been welcome but it was bearing the pungent odor of the chicken house. Doc complained about the odor and Hiram told him he could get used to anything. Doc disagreed. The trickster in Hiram sprang to life and during lunch, Hiram slipped away and took Doc's hat with him. Later that afternoon as they continued plowing. Doc started complaining about the smell but soon stopped mentioning it. Hiram casually asked Doc if he still smelled the hen house and Doc said no, guess the wind had changed. Hiram then asked Doc for his hat and turned down the band on the inside to show him the smeared chicken manure just to prove his point that you CAN get used to anything. Nobody telling this story told what Doc did to Hiram for tricking him so but since they both loved a joke, I guess he took it good naturedly after the initial shock.

Now my memory fails me as to who did what to whom. Let this be a lesson to younger folk. Get the details of family stories down in writing or on tape while those who know them are alive. Anyway, electric lights had just come to the country and Hiram and Doc were just about to go to sleep when one of them told the other to "blow out the light" just as they always had done with kerosene lanterns. The poor fellow actually tried to "blow out" an electric light... probably stopped when his brother started laughing.

Well, no one but family would be interested in reading these stories, and they worked much better while sitting around a fireplace or pot bellied stove and rocking on the back two legs of a canebottomed straight chair. I was too young to take part in the conversation but I remember going to sleep in the same room (the one over Howell's left shoulder in the photo on Lola's page) while watching the shadows on the wall.

Hiram had dropped out of school before he learned to read so for years (ever after he was ordained) Mary read the Bible to him at home and Doc read the Bible for him in the pulpit. Doc would softly speak the scripture so just Hiram could hear and Hiram would repeat it in a sturdy voice so everybody could hear. On one occasion Hiram was obscuring the text with his finger so Doc whispered "Move your finger brother Boatright" and without thinking, Hiram repeated for all to hear, as though this was the very word of God, "Move your finger brother Boatright." Now you ask me if this really happened. All I can say is that it was told to me for the truth.
