Notes for VIRGILIA ADELAIDE BOATWRIGHT:

Virgilia Adelaide Boatwright

Virgilia was born September 14, 1841 in Cumberland County, Virginia. She died August 4, 1899, at her home on 1500 Filmore street, Lynchburg, Virginia “after a week’s illness of typhoid fever”. She married Charles Eugene Porter on August 14th, 1866. He was born August 10, 1842 in Dover, Delaware, and died March 3, 1908 in Lynchburg, Virginia, from pneumonia. She was buried in the family cemetery in Cumberland County, Virginia. He had remarried after Virgilia’s death to Blanche Estelle Johnson on November 19, 1901. Following his death, his body was taken for burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia - the home of his second wife.

The date of Virgilia’s death comes from her obituary (Obituary for Mrs. C. E. Porter, The Lynchburg News, Lynchburg, Virginia, August 5, 1899, p. 5). Her birth month and date comes from her grand daughter’s records (a member of the DAR), but the year of her birth is derived from both the aforementioned obituary (death listed as age 59) and 1850 Census showing her as age 10 on September 4, 1850 (ten days short of her 11th birthday)

Notes for CHARLES EUGENE PORTER:

Charles Eugene Porter

Charles Eugene Porter, son of Professor Zachariah Porter and Nancy Nichols Porter, was born August 10, 1842 in Dover, Delaware . At the age of 18, Charles left his home in Newark, Delaware to join the Confederacy. On May 24, 1861, he enlisted at Aquia Creek Landing in Virginia into the Confederate States Navy with the rank of “acting gunner.”

On October 14, 1862, Charles Porter joined with the Virginia Light Infantry (2nd Fluvanna Battery, Cpt. Ancell’s Co.). He soon found himself serving with his future brother in law, Robert Henry Boatwright (#8-577) in a newly formed company under Cpt. Meade. Meade’s company had been formed by the merger of the 1st and 2nd Fluvanna Batteries and would later taken over by Captain Snead.

Charles Porter returned to the CSN in 1863 and was serving as a Gunner officer on board the CSS Richmond in Richmond, Virginia when that city fell to the Yankees in April of 1865.

On August 14th, 1866, Charles Eugene Porter married Virgilia Adelaide Boatwright; sister of his wartime friend, Robert Henry Boatwright.

Charles and Virgilia settled in Cumberland County where he taught school. Around the year 1880, the family moved to Lynchburg, Virginia , where he took a job with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad as an auditor. Robert Henry Boatwright also relocated to Lynchburg to work for the railroad. Charles was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Lynchburg of the Garland-Rhodes Camp of Confederate Veterans in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Charles was born August 10, 1842 in Dover, Delaware.

Charles moved his family to Lynchburg, Virginia, to work there as an auditor for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad.

Charles taught the Baraca men’s bible class at College Hill Baptist Church and was, by all accounts, a faithful attendee.

Charles’ older brother, Edward DeLong Porter, served as the State Adjutant General for Delaware (1863-1875).

Charles served in the Confederate army; his brother Edward served in the Union army.

Captain Robert Henry Boatwright Gravestone

My Porter family always referred to him as uncle “Henry”. That he was the brother of Virgilia Boatwright Porter is confirmed by many sources, to include both Virgilia’s and Charles Porter’s obituaries. He was known in Lynchburg as “Captain R. H. Boatwright”, but I suspect that the title was honorary and post-civil war. He was a member of the Garland-Rhodes Camp of Confederate Veterans in Lynchburg , Virginia . I have it from a family source that he is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery on Grace Street in Lynchburg, Va.
