Kyle Andrew Boatwright (1880-1953) was born in a log house, the home of his grandparents, John and Eunica Boatwright, on September 28, 1880. His father was Hiram Gilmore Boatwright and his mother was Lizzie Ida Bird Boatwright, daughter of Dr. John S. Bird and Mary Jordan Lasseter. He was reared by his grandparents and taught by his Aunt Reubin Arcannie Boatwright. His father died when he was three years old and he was separated from his mother at the age of nine. Kyle had a happy childhood on the farm near Judson Church. He was adored by his grandparents, "Old Pap" and "Old Mother" and his Aunt Cannie.
In 1905 Kyle met his wife to be, Rosa Lee Stinson, at the home of Will and Maude Watford, who were neighbors of the Birds and the Boatwrights. The courtship did not last very long, Rosa said that Kyle proposed to her one night a few months later while they were out walking in the moonlight. They were married on February 18, 1906. When Kyle and Rosa were first married, they lived in the Judson Community where he was farming. The year 1906 was a bad cotten year because of rain. They stayed with "Old Pap" and "Old Mother" for a while, then came to Abbeville to stay with her folks, Mrs. Emily Stinson and family. On January 15, 1907 their first child, Lizzie Eunice "L.E." was born one mile from Abbeville in the Stinson home on the W.J. Martin farm. After L.E. was born, Kyle must have decided to quit farming and try something else. His brother, John Simmons, who had married in January 1906, helped Kyle find a job in Montgomery, so he moved his wife and child to Montgomery sometime during the year 1907. Kyle and John, and their families, lived together in a house on McDonough Street. Kyle had a job with the Fire Department during the two years they lived in Montgomery. On November 25, 1908 their second child, Annie Bird, was born. While Kyle and Rose were living in Montgomery, Eunica Atkinson Boatwright, "Old Mother", fell and broke her leg and dislocated her hip in September 1907. She died on September 30, 1907. "Old Pap" and "Old Mother" were living with their daughter, Mary Jane Boatwright Bird, at the time she died and "Old Pap" continued to live with her until he died on January 9, 1910.
Sometime after Annie Bird was born, Rose and her two children came back to Abbeville to visit her folks. Rose could not be persuaded to return to Montgomery. She did not like living in Montgomery and was unhappy away from her mother and family. After a short while, Kyle came back and they decided to make Abbeville their home. From then on, they lived with Rose's folks, the Emily Stinson family, on the W.J. Martin Farm in Henry County. At that time, Kyle's mother, Lizzie, started visiting him in Abbeville once a year and she stayed a month on each visit. Sometimes she visited her stepmother, Mary Jane Boatwright Bird, at the old Bird home at Judson.
In 1912, Kyle got a job as Assistant Postmaster in Abbeville. Augustus E. Hawley was Postmaster. Over the years Kyle managed to hold some good jobs, but nothing seemed to be permanent. He was a good bookkeeper and clerk. He worked as a recorder in the Henry County Court House, and his handwriting can be recognized on many records. He had excellent penmanship. At one time he was a Justice of the Peace in Henry County. The Henry County Marriage Records show that many of his kinsmen and family connections had served as Justice of the Peace. his great grandfather, John Atkinson, was a Justice of the Peace as well as William Gamble, a relative of his great grandmother, Jane Gamble Atkinson. Also, George L. Fleming, the husband of his great aunt, Nancy Atkinson Fleming, was a Justice of the Peace.
Kyle had several opportunities away from Abbeville, but Rose would not go. She not only refused to leave Abbeville, but insisted on living with her folks. At times, the situation was not too pleasant. Sometimes, it was obvious that the presence of the Boatwrights was not enjoyed by some of the Stinsons. It was soon learned, however, that they were there to stay. The Boatwright family began to increase. By 1924 there were eight children and by the time the last one came along, Grandma Emily Stinson, Uncle Bob Stinson, Aunt Jenny Stinson and others felt close to and accepted each one as a part of the family. At one time, there were fifteen people in the household. At times Kyle must have had the feeling that he was just an outsider and onlooker while others took charge of his children. He was daresome to punish any of them. There was a good relationship between him and Grandma Emily Stinson, and also Uncle Bob Stinson. He and Grandma Stinson had an agreement about what he would furnish toward living expenses. He was always bringing in something extra not grown on the farm. The Boatwright children helped with the farm work and chores around the house as they became older. They all went to school in Abbeville and went to church at the First Baptist Church. It was diificult to keep this many children in clothes and shoes and pay the school fees required. During this period, books had to be bought for each child by their parents. There were no free school books or free lunches. Every year, there was a scuffle to find used books which could be bought much cheaper than new ones. Since there were two or more years between us, the books could be not be passed down. During the Depression years, it was even harder since jobs and money were scarce. Some of the children dropped out of school because of these hardships, but others stuck it out and finished high school. The youngest child, Virginia Maude "Jenny", was born January 10, 1924 and the oldest child, L.E., finished high school in 1925.
When "Old Pap" died in 1910, he left his two grandsons, Kyle Andrew and John Simmons, 123 acres of land. In 1911 they sold it to their cousins and half-uncle, John J. Bird, for $800 ($16,700 in today's dollars). Somehow it did not seem important for them to hold on to it, but if Kyle had known what the future held for him, he might have tried.
In 1931 or 1932, part of the family, Kyle, Rosa, son Jake and daughters Jenny and Willie Mae moved out of the house with Grandma Stinson and into another house on the Martin Farm below the Stinson house. Jenny didn't stay home much, she always wanted to spend the night at the big house and sleep with Aunt Mollie Stinson.
In 1933, son Jim Boatwright had an accident with a car and crushed his knee. He stayed in the bed from July to September of that year, and was getting around a little bit on crutches when Grandma Stinson became very ill. She died on September 27, 1933. Uncle Alex Stinson's only daughter, Juanita, who was just twenty one years old, had died in July 1933.
After this, Rosa's health began to fail. She had high blood pressure and heart trouble. At that time, the only treatment given for high blood pressure was epsom salts. Aunt Maude Watford had died in 1934 which also added to Rosa's grief. In May 1935, Rosa had some kind of a spell and was unconscious for about two days. She was never well after this. On November 8, 1935, she was in the cowpen with Aunt Mitt and Aunt Mollie helping them milk the cows when suddenly she fell unconscious. She never knew anything else and died that day at one o'clock.
Kyle was broken up over this. Jenny was only eleven years old when Rosa died. After Rosa's death, the decision was made that we all get back together again, so we moved back with Uncle Bob. Aunt Mitt and Kyle were married in 1936.
In June of 1953 Kyle became very ill and was carried to the hospital in Fort Gaines, Georgia. He was operated on the last day of June 1953 and died the last day of August 1953. Kyle died from a ruptured ulcer of the stomach and other complications on August 31, 1953. He is buried in the cemetery behind the First Baptist Church in Abbeville. Three weeks after Kyle died, Aunt Jenny passed away on September 23, 1953.

Notes for JOHN SIMMONS BOATWRIGHT:
John Simmons Boatwright (1882-1934), the second son of Hiram and Lizzie Bird Boatwright, was born in a little house near Judson Cemetery. In 1889, when his grandfather, Dr. John S. Bird, went to Montgomery to live, John and his mother Lizzie (who was not married at the time) also went to Montgomery to live. His brother, Kyle, remained in Henry County with his Boatwright grandparents. John continued to live and grow up in Montgomery. He became a railroad engineer and was more prosperous than his brother, Kyle. On January 2, 1906, John married Mamie Bland of Verbena, Alabama. They had three children: John Martin, Elizabeth and Helen, all born in Montgomery. John died at his home in Montgomery at 661 Mildred Street on June 10, 1934.

GEORGE W. BOATWRIGHT
1888 - 21 Sept 1939
Mr. George W. Boatwright, 51, a life long resident of Chesterfield county died at his home in West Chesterfield early Thursday morning, September 21st. Though Mr. Boatwright had not been well for the past two months, he had been confined to his bed but two days, when a complication of heart and kidney trouble caused his death. He is survived by one son, Jack, and one sister, Mrs. Fannie Davis. Mr. Boatwright had been employed by the county for many years in road maintenance work. Funeral services were held at Zoar church Thursday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. F. M Cannon.
